Wind Energy on Rhode Island's shore is a huge resource. Dissatisfaction with international energy dependence, government mandates on renewable energy, and increasing visual acceptance of wind turbines are just a few factors making wind farms more profitable. Turbines are already engineered for marine environments and would be suitable for this study area. They are also capable of performing additional functions, such as breakwaters, fish habitat, aids to navigation, and tourism. The below diagram is a wind rose for the Point Judith Lighthouse. The majority of wind energy in the study area comes from the southwest. Case Study: Wind Turbines as Offshore Reefs on Matunuck Point (.pdf) |
